What Is Hypnosis?

There doesn't seem to be a consensus explaining exactly what hypnosis is. You'll find a different definition in each place you look. Here is my best definition:

Hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness in which the subject has heightened suggestibility, within certain limitations. He/she can access creativity, reprogram old patterns, overcome limiting beliefs, reduce stress, work with pain relief, and access hidden strengths.

An altered state of consciousness, or trance state, is a normal and natural state that almost everyone goes in and out of multiple times each day. For instance; most people have experienced being in a boring class or meeting where, without even realizing it, they "go somewhere else" in their minds and are abruptly brought back to the present when asked a question. Daydreaming is common trance state. Driving on autopilot is another. Becoming so focused on a book or movie or problem such that everything else fades out around you is another common trance state. Hypnosis is simply a guided trance state.

How Can You Tell If A Person Is Hypnotized?

There are several physical signs of hypnosis: the eyes might tear up, the whites of the eyes might redden, the eyelids might flutter, the person might sigh deeply. There might be a loosening of the muscles, flattening of facial musles, the skin might take on a waxy tone. There might be changes in swallowing, changes in breathing rates and depth. There might be body twitching, the eyeballs might roll up into the head. All of these are good signs of hypnosis. You would rarely see all of these signs in one person during a single session but you might see a combination of these signs at the same time.

Everyone experiences the hypnotic trance differently. Some may feel a floating sensation. Others might feel very heavy. Extremeties might tingle. Fingers might twitch. There might be feelings of warmth or coolness or tingling. Or none of the above might happen. It's just different for each person.

What is hypnosis used for?

I'm asked this question all the time. I CAN say that hypnosis is NOT a substitute for qualified medical or psychiatric care. After stating that, here is a partial list of items that hypnosis has successfully been used for:
  • Accelerated Healing
  • Accelerated Learning
  • Allergies
  • Alopecia Areata
  • Anxieties
  • Asthma
  • Athletic Performance
  • Behavior Modification
  • Chemo-Radiation/Side Effects Reduction
  • Childbirth Preparation
  • Depression
  • Fears / Phobias
  • IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome)
  • Insomnia
  • Instant Motivation
  • Memory/Concentration
  • Motion Sickness
  • Natal Regression
  • Pain Control
  • Past Life Regression
  • Relaxation
  • Self Confidence
  • Smoking Cessation
  • Stress Management
  • Success Programming
  • Surgery Preparation

And much, much more… Just ask if hypnosis can work on your issue. If it doesn't, you'll be refered to someone that can help you.

What is "Clinical Hypnotherapy"?

Clinical hypnotherapy (also call Therapeutic Hypnosis) is an advanced method that is used as a complement to conventional medicine. Clinical hypnosis uses the subconscious mind to prevent pain, diminish fear and anxiety and relieve suffering.

A few typical uses for clinical hypnosis are child birth preparation for a drug-free/pain-free birth; pain-free dental work; pre- and post- surgery preparation; alleviation of chemotherapy and radiation side-effects; pain control after trauma; and accelerated healing.

Clinical hypnosis has even been used as the only anesthesia for surgery. The patient remains alert, happy, and completely pain-free during the surgery and is able to walk immediately afterwards. The incision(s) don't become infected and healing takes place weeks sooner than normal.

What is meant by "Regression"?

Regression simply means "going back". There's a difference between simply remembering an event and regressing to the event. Remembering is viewing the event softened through the lenses of time, while regressing is viewing the event through your eyes at the age it happened. We all have triggers that automatically regress us back to certain events and times. Smells, songs, certain sounds, tastes, can take us back to meaaningful events in our pasts. The triggers can bring back either pleasant or traumatic events.

For example, the smell of pine trees immediately takes me back to being nine years old and lying in the pine needles under the blueberry bushes close to my home in Massachusetts. I see the flowering fruit and hear the buzzing bees that visited the blossoms. I feel the cold touch of the huge granite boulders that I clamored up next to the bushes. I remember watching the blueberry blossoms turn to tiny green fruit, then to pink-blushed, tiny marbles, and finally I can taste the almost purple tangy explosions of blueberry flavor. All of those images, sounds, smells, tastes and feelings flood immediately into my brain when I smell pine needles.

There are multiple degrees of regression. Regression can go back a few days or months, several years, back to womb-time, or further. Your subconsious memory is constantly recording. Hypnosis allows you to access all of your recorded memories.

Regression is used to go back to the initial source of a particular problem to be able to change the way that you view it. This change of view allows you to deal positively with your life's issues rather than be stuck in negative or self-defeating behaviors.
